Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Digital Citizenship

At ASIA Sumas Mountain, we recognize that technology is an important tool for learning, creativity, communication, and collaboration. While students are not required to bring a personal device to school, secondary students who feel they would benefit from having a device for learning are encouraged to bring their own laptop or tablet for educational use. We have found that middle school students do not need the device in class unless there are specific students who require it for learning. 

Before Bringing a Device

Students who wish to use a personal device on the school network must complete the district's Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Consent Form. The form must be signed by both the student and parent/guardian and submitted to the school before access to district systems, including the intranet, Wi-Fi, and other digital learning platforms, will be provided.

Expectations for Device Use

Using a personal device at school is a privilege that comes with responsibility. All school and district expectations apply when students are using digital technology, whether at school or while participating in school-related online activities. [AP 334 | A...l District]

Students are expected to:

• Use devices for educational purposes during instructional time.
• Follow teacher direction regarding when and how devices may be used.
• Demonstrate respectful and responsible digital citizenship.
• Protect their privacy and the privacy of others.
• Communicate appropriately online and in digital spaces.
• Complete their own work and properly acknowledge the ideas and work of others.
• Follow copyright laws and cite sources when using images, videos, information, or other media. 

Privacy and Online Safety

Students should be thoughtful about their digital footprint and understand that online actions can have lasting impacts. Students should not share passwords or post personal information such as addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, financial information, medical information, or identifiable images of others without permission.

Students are encouraged to report any online content or behaviour that is inappropriate, unsafe, or inconsistent with our school values. 

Responsible Use

Personal devices are intended to support learning, creativity, research, organization, and communication. Activities that disrupt learning, compromise privacy, or violate school or district policies are not permitted. Students who do not meet these expectations may have device privileges restricted and may be subject to school consequences.

We believe that learning how to use technology responsibly is an important life skill. By working together, students, families, and staff can create a safe, respectful, and productive digital learning environment that supports student success.
